There are indents on the cap and tower to do this remove 13mm bolts and then heat the area around the sealant with a torch(propane) and then smack with a piece of wood and hammer the cap and shift tower from the side to spin them. Here is a link to my photo album with the full size pictures: just in case!! and here's a link to the component teardown by Pashat: Jeres a gallery on swapping an 02A in an A2 in case anybody wants'needs that: īTW loaded all the pix on my hardrive. Done 020 without any probs or major special tools so this looks relatively easy DIY Tearing a VW 02A/O2A/02J/O2J Transmission Down to its Sub Assemblies Wheels confirmed the gearbox had failed….rough grinding noise from the diff…so we fitted and new gearbox (an EVS instead of an ENJ, same ratios just different gear selector mechanisum). With this I took it to Sedgley's where we examined the frontĭrive, CV joints and after having the car up in the air and rotating the front This was them further confirmed by turning right when a heard another I am now thinking, definitely gearbox and possible diffįailure. The clutch was exactly the same as before. Off again and noticed a whine on deceleration and a very light clicking, incidentally The worst I pulled over and checked the car over…no physical gearbox damage….set

Straight line and then BANG!! Then drove okay again…OMG what was that…fearing Okay, so here I am at 144k miles, on a Sunday doing 30mph While they are working on it and show me anything I ask to look at…. Garage and MOT Centre and the Guys there are great and let me look over the car Knew it was perfectly clean so possibly a leaking seal?, I asked the garageĪnd they said there were no leaking oil seals and if there was it was the firstĪt this point I must say that the garage I use is Sedgley That maybe a contaminated clutch disk might be to blame, I saw it go in and Then letting rip, the rough engagement went away for a few days…weird…I was thinking Oil, not the light golden colour of gearbox oil.Īfter having a couple of very "sporty starts" IE 3500rpm The gearbox oil again…very dirty, not a good sign looked a lot like used engine Well drive it until it fails and live with the problem. Rough engagement when the box was warm….I assumed this was the clutch bedding in.Īfter driving it for a year I decided that if the clutch was faulty I may as Had the clutch replaced and it started exhibiting a very Worse decided to have it replaced with a SMF conversion kit.no big deal. Usually in 4th as boost was coming on at what. Progressive and light, at about 112,000 it started to slip occasionally, The original clutch has always operated perfectly, smooth, I changed the gearbox oil at 80,000 miles with OEM VW Oil It was remapped to 195bhp back at 70,000 miles.

I just thought I would let you know my gearbox/ClutchĮxperience over the last couple of years because it might be of some use….some background first I have had my golf GTI since 2001 I got it withġ1k on the clock and the previous owner was a work colleague, its s 2000 AGU
